A tragic incident, which recalls the dangerousness of wild life. A woman and her 3-month-old baby have been trampled to death by an elephant in south-eastern Zimbabwe.
The 23-year-old mother crossed the deadly path of a herd of elephants on her way home to rural Chipinge district. She had just visited relatives living nearby with her child to wish the New Year, the National Parks Authority reported on Tuesday.
“An elephant suddenly attacked and killed her and her baby on the spot,” Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson Tinashe Farawo told AFP.
Conflicts between humans and wildlife are increasing in rural Zimbabwe, with the increase in populations in these areas and the encroachment on nature. According to Zimparks, 40 people were killed in the first three quarters of 2021.
