At a press conference, Andy Beshear, Governor of Kentucky, said at least 64 people are believed to have died in his state as tornadoes hit the southern and central United States.

The elected official said the figure was only provisional, adding that it could be expected to increase to “over 70, maybe even 80”.

Earlier, in the weekend, Andy Beshear had estimated that the number of victims could exceed “the hundred”.

A major disaster

One of the longest and most powerful tornadoes on record in the United States was swept across the US state on Friday evening. In total, around thirty of these storms swept across the south and the center of the country at the same time.

US President Joe Biden has lamented one of the “worst series of tornadoes” in the country’s history. While declaring a state of major disaster in Kentucky.
