New York: 12-year-old boy shot dead while sitting in car

A 12-year-old boy was shot to death this Thursday, March 31 in the evening in New York (United States), while sitting in a stationary car. The child was in the company of a young woman who was injured and a little girl found, meanwhile, safe and sound.

The facts occurred shortly before 8 p.m. when the police were called for shots fired in the Brooklyn neighborhood.

Upon their arrival, the latter found that a car was parked in a street with three occupants, explained during a brief press briefing an inspector from the New York police (NYPD), Michael Kemper.

“In the passenger seat was a 12-year-old boy who had been shot multiple times. He died on the spot”, explained the policeman, speaking of a “terrible incident”.

Hit repeatedly

The police officer added that a 20-year-old woman, sitting in the driver’s seat, had also been shot several times. She was taken to hospital for surgery and “expected to survive”. Finally, an 8-year-old girl, sitting in the back seat, was not affected.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the victims had parked their car to buy food when “shots were fired which went through the vehicle”, added the inspector, but without saying if the victims had been targeted or had been hit by stray bullets.

Democratic Mayor Eric Adams took office in January on an agenda to tackle crime, recidivism and the illegal spread of guns in New York, a megacity of nearly nine million people whose crime statistics and crimes, particularly with firearms, have risen sharply since 2020.
