US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken will visit kyiv on Sunday, two months to the day after the start of the Russian invasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday.
“Tomorrow, American officials will come to us: I will meet the Minister of Defense (Lloyd Austin) and Antony Blinken”, declared Volodymyr Zelensky during a press conference organized in a metro station on the central square of kyiv. This will be the first official visit by US government officials to Ukraine since February 24.
Asked by AFP, a spokesman for the US State Department declined to comment. Volodymyr Zelensky, for his part, hoped that his American counterpart Joe Biden could also “come to support the Ukrainian people” in kyiv when the security situation allowed. He said discussions on Sunday would focus on US arms shipments to Ukraine.
“Last week, the signals, the messages, the steps, the deadlines, the numbers – I’m talking about the weapons of the United States – everything improved”, he congratulated himself in the face of the press, saying to himself ” grateful” to the American administration, even if he would like “even heavier and more powerful weapons” to face the Russian army.
